What to expect
The morning starts at Mercado dos Lavradores before the tourist buses arrive. The flower sellers are already mid-pitch, the fish stalls are at their loudest, and the produce — much of it grown in the levada terraces above the city — arrives overnight. Paul moves through it slowly, by design.
A wine session follows in one of the old lodges or cellars in the Zona Velha. The bottles are Madeira: Verdelho, Sercial, Bual, poured in the right order and explained without a script. You'll understand the solera system by the third glass, not by being told about it.
Lunch is a sit-down meal at a restaurant Paul chooses based on the day and the group. The meal itself is paid separately. After lunch, the afternoon shifts into the quieter side of Funchal — neighbourhoods that don't feature on most itineraries, streets that require a guide to make sense of. The pace slows. The questions change. That is usually when the day becomes something people remember.
The walk ends when it ends. There is no fixed cutoff — Paul reads the group and the day, and stays until it feels right to stop.

Paul arrived in Funchal in 2012, planning a short stay between contracts. The city had other ideas. The market pulled him in on day two, the wine lodges on day four, and the Zona Velha on the weekend. He never quite left.
He spent several years working in hospitality across the island before someone asked, on a long slow morning at Mercado dos Lavradores, whether he ever showed people around. He said he would think about it. He did not think very long.
Now he walks small groups through the parts of Funchal that reward a slow pace: the cellars where Verdelho and Sercial age in relative quiet, the covered stalls where the flower sellers arrive before sunrise, the steep back lanes of the old centre that most visitors pass without stopping. One group at a time. Never more than four people.
He does not use a microphone.
