A sip that becomes a story
Madeira wine is not one thing. A dry Sercial drunk cold at midday is a different proposition entirely from a warm Bual beside a plate of cheese late in the afternoon. This walk moves between those moods deliberately.
Paul walks you through Funchal's wine district at a pace that lets you look and ask questions. The lodges have been here for generations; some of the barrels have too. The history is in the room, not in a script.
Three tastings, three styles, three conversations about what makes an island wine built to travel the world. By the end you will know the difference between Verdelho and Bual not from a chart but from memory.

The wines
Verdelho
Medium-dry with a smoky mineral edge. Usually the first wine of the walk, while your palate is fresh and the morning is still cool.
Sercial
The driest of the four noble varieties. High acidity, long finish, and a kind of austerity that makes it pair well with conversation rather than food.
Bual
Rich, complex, and genuinely sweet without being cloying. The wine that tends to end the walk on the right note.

I came for a week. Thirteen years later, I know where the good Bual is kept.
Paul arrived in Funchal in 2012, planning a short stay between contracts. The city had other ideas. The market pulled him in on day two, the wine lodges on day four, and the Zona Velha on the weekend. He never quite left.
He spent several years working in hospitality across the island before someone asked, on a long slow morning at Mercado dos Lavradores, whether he ever showed people around. He said he would think about it. He did not think very long.
Now he walks small groups through the parts of Funchal that reward a slow pace: the cellars where Verdelho and Sercial age in relative quiet, the covered stalls where the flower sellers arrive before sunrise, the steep back lanes of the old centre that most visitors pass without stopping. One group at a time. Never more than four people.
He does not use a microphone.

Which wines do we taste?+
Verdelho, Sercial, and Bual — three of Madeira's principal styles. Each is tasted in a lodge or cellar that produces or stores it, so the setting gives the wine context a tasting room rarely can.
How long does the wine walk take?+
Roughly half a day — usually three to four hours depending on how long the conversations run. Paul sets no hard clock on a good tasting.
Is food included?+
The walk includes small accompaniments at each stop — bread, cheese, perhaps a local biscuit. It is a wine walk, not a meal, but you will not go hungry.
Can I book just for myself?+
Yes. The wine walk is priced per group, not per person, so a solo guest pays the same €270 as a couple or a group of four.
Where do we meet?+
Paul confirms a meeting point in Funchal's old city when you book. It is always walking distance from the main hotels in the centre.
